Unit 10

The 2 minute film I am going to do is an action, drama film. Where a teenager is stalked by a freaky man who attempts to attack him.

Codes and Conventions of films

Some of the codes and conventions including camera movement high-low, side to side, the angles of the camera, over the shoulder, panning shots, POV (Point of View Shots).

Normally in horror films the codes and conventions include a scary creatures or person. Subsequently, horror films are usually created with the intention of scaring the audience, as well as making the audience question where and when the next attack will happen and who it will happen to. Normally in horror films the murderer will either carry a knife or an axe. The murderer is either well known by the victims or unknown, leading the audience and the characters into questioning who they think the killer is, and have they been shown killing anyone or not, this is used to create a climax in the middle of the film, where tension is built throughout the beginning of the film.

This is a 'Popplet' of Codes and Conventions of a film. It includes sound, cinematography and editing.

Pre-Production

Script for my 2 minute film

Some of the skills I used for this include innovative thinking as I had to ensure that I had not copied other people's work.

My two minute film is about two teenagers who is going along a road minding there own business, when all of a sudden they are jumped by a man wielding a knife. One teen escapes but the is now hunted by the man. With the man hunting for him the teenager must fight for his life to escape his impending doom.

The 'Popplet' below shows my 2 Minute Film Idea. It shows the script/plot of the film, the roles of the people in my group, the camera shots we could use for filming and it shows the locations that we could film at ,which is suitable for my game.

Narrative Structure of a film

In every film, there is a narrative structure. This is mainly to give the audience an understanding of the film. Films start with an idea that is then built up, for the big rise, which then leads to the climax which gets the audience on the edge of their seats. After the climax is the falling action, this is where the film characters start to get over the climax. Finally the denouement is the ending of the film, where everyone goes off and does their own thing after the climax.

Locations

Some of the locations that I will use to film include a street road, leading into a forest/common area. These are suitable as they are mainly set around locations where attacks happen.

Mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scene involves everything that you can see in the film during that scene.

Risk Assessment

The risk assessment for my film will include, a trip hazard, slip hazard , someone could also trip on branches that are left in the middle of the park. Risks in my film could include a prop breaking into a sharp object which could be used as a weapon.

Cinematography

Cinematography is used when filming it includes:

Angles/Movement

Camera Shots

Sound

What you hear in the film:

Ambience: Atmosphere fits into the setting and location for example: if a film is set in a city, then in the background will include car engines/horns, planes flying above the city and people near the scene speaking.

Diegetic: Sound with a visible source i.e. a car going past the camera whilst filming and then the camera continuing to film the car.

Non Diegetic: Without visible source for example: in a horror film, someone could be screaming in a room, then in another room could be another person who is being filmed, where they and the camera can hear the scream, but because the camera is not on the person screaming then this is non-diegetic.

Synchronous: Sound in sync with source-having someone play an instrument and then syncing it up to fit in.

Volume: How loud something is.

Tempo: Sound Speed-how fast music is played.

Bridges: Hearing before seeing-hearing a car before cutting to a scene of a car.

Aural Signifier: Identification of a sound associated with an image like Jaws theme, it is significant to the film's genre.

Correct Equipment for filming

Tripod

A tripod is used for holding the camera when no one can hold the camera. The handle at the back of the camera, is used to move the camera into the shot that you need and want to use. It is also used for steadying the camera so the camera shots are not shaky whilst filming.

  Camera

A camera is used for filming or taking pictures, attaching the camera to a tripod allows the user to either take pictures or film from different angles.

Locations

Locations for filming must be suitable for the film you are making. For example: if you are filming a horror film, then you might need a remote location where there are abandoned houses which could be used for the film.

              Props

Props are used for weapons, the setting (Kitchen, lounge etc...). Costumes also count as props. (Iron Man's helmet, Batman's suit and batarangs).

Other props include vehicles, technology (Phones, computers, televisions) weapons (Knife, guns).

Costumes

Costumes are what the actors were to look like their characters to suit the film. For example: in Star Wars, the stormtroopers wear the traditional costume, whereas people in Tatooine, would wear something to suit the location.

 Special Effects

In films, special effects are used for explosions, when someone jumps from one building to another, when a spaceship is in the air or when the film goes to space.

Another example of special effects in use is the Jurassic Park franchise. Throughout the franchise the dinosaurs behaviour is all generated through CGI (Computer Generated Imagery).

My film is about two teenagers who are walking along a road who then get stalked by a mysterious man.

Evaluation

In this unit I had to make a two minute thriller film. To help me I researched thriller films and how they use some techniques to make their film better. Before filming I did primary and secondary research on what makes a good thriller film and what should be in a thriller film. Some of the websites I looked at said that the following techniques should be in a thriller film:

Surprises and twists in the storyline

Plays with the audience's mind/Makes them think what is going to happen next

Quick Cuts and Different camera angles

Dramatic Music that fits into the film

The use of lighting to create shadows

Flashbacks

Also in thriller films they try to use cliffhangers to build suspense in the audience as they try to guess what happens next in the next scene of the film. Props can also show what genre a film is as genres will have different props from other genres for example in a thriller some of the props normally include knives or axes if the film is a horror film.
