Unit 7

Game Trailer for my game, 3D game, collectibles along the way, kills for revenge.

A brief is where you create a plan of what you are going to do. There is different types of brief such as Formal, Informal, Cooperative, Negotiated etc...

Each type has its advantages and disadvantages.

For example, a formal brief allows the client is open to any ideas or if there is an issue with the company. A disadvantage is the client may have not told the company enough information for the company to produce the product.

Brief advantages and disadvantages

An informal brief advantage: is that their is more verbal communication between the client and company. The disadvantage is nothing is written on a document so the company or the client do not no any deadlines that have been set.

Cooperative: Can be more than one perspective on creating the product. Disadvantage is more arguments are prone to happen,  with each member arguing  about which brief or plan is better to use.

In The Apprentice, some of the briefs used are negotiated briefs where they discuss with the clients where they could improve their services. The men discussed whether they had a better idea or not. Whereas the girls just went with the one idea, they then lost the client's clothes.

The negotiated brief was a good idea as it gave everyone in the team gets to have a view or a say in what the team does. This is a good way to approach the task, as you could all agree on one idea that. They also had a demographic brief to see if anyone has any other ideas and see which one is the best idea to get the best results for the team.

Why is my idea is unique

My idea is unique, as no other gaming company has created a game where you fight for revenge. They have all created a game where you fight for freedom, the truth etc...

This could be successful as people would want a game where you fight for revenge. It could be very successful as people could enjoy it as it is something different. However, this could be bad as people may not enjoy it and find it fun or they find it the same as any other fighting games.

I also think my idea is unique as the player can choose what they want to say to characters throughout the game, which will lead to different characters either help you or will not help you throughout the game's storyline.

The section above included creative/innovative thinking making sure that it is not copied from other companies products which would mean no copyright strike would be issued on me for copying other people's work.

Codes and Conventions of trailers

Some of the codes and conventions of a trailer are having an age certificate, production logos, the film title, social media, character introductions, music, names, the release date.

Each has its on role in the trailer, the release date informs people of when they can view the product. Character introductions allow the views to understand the characters they have seen better than before, the age certificate tells the target audience who should be watching the the product. The production logo tells viewers who helped create it. Social Media tells viewers where they can go to find out more about the product. The code and conventions help sell the product as they make it stand out more than anything else.

The popplet above shows the Codes and Conventions of a trailer.

Original idea

My original idea was a 3D game also called 'Blood Ties: The Vendetta'. I decided to change my idea as i feel a 2D game would possibly sell better then a 3D game, potentially.

Brief

Game company name: Rogue Games

Project Summary

Rogue Games are a new gaming company who have released worldwide selling games. The game they are now selling called Blood Ties: The Vendetta. Where you the player will fight the thugs in revenge for a betrayal which happened before the games year. With global stores, Rogue Games have made an incredible amount of profit from the games, but they feel Blood Ties: The Vendetta will be the best of the best and will give them the best profit and game sales. It is a 2D game where multiple thugs are based around the level, when the player progresses through the game the levels will get harder with more intelligent thugs and more difficult terrain to overcome.

This is a good way to allow players to not only have fun but to also, have a challenge whilst playing which allows them to play the game how they want to play the game. In some cases, you can play the game by approaching the game stealthy, or go in to the level killing everyone. However, when you stealth, you will gain points to level up, whereas if you go and kill everyone you will be able to upgrade your finishing moves. For example: If you complete the level stealthily you can get a level upgrade which means you can upgrade your character to make no sound. Nevertheless, if you complete the level all guns blazing, you can upgrade your character to have better fighting skills, more intelligent, Strength, and better weapon crafting skills. This gives the game a more enjoyable vive to it.

Also you can role play whilst playing the game. This involves chosen what the player says and what he does, body language, facial expressions etc…

My idea is unique as no one has ever created a revenge game, they have all created games where you fight for freedom, truth etc… To overcome troubles I may have during filming, I am getting other people to help me, I am also going to get them to help me edit.

The single purpose is to make sure the game is actually sold and profit is made on the product. The secondary purpose is to make sure it stands out to potential customers. These are the purposes as this are the most important when selling a product it needs to stand out to grab the customer's attention so they buy the product.

The long term purposes are to make sure that people actually want to buy and play the game, and to enjoy their time playing the game.

Target Audience:

The target audience for Blood Ties: The Vendetta is a 16+ due to the violence in the game. To get rid of the thugs you need to kill them, whether that be with a knife, sword, hand to hand combat or guns. Also, some of the content which has been used may not be appropriate for young kids. This is a suitable age rating for the game due to its nature. Also there is blood when you kill someone so that has a play a part in the rating being what it is. There is an option in the setting where blood can be turned off, so that could bring the age rating down to a 12+. To stop children under 12 playing the game, there is a parent warning on the cover as well as the age rating on the front of the game cover.  Nevertheless, there is blood when you kill someone, and that has a play a part in the rating being what it is and for who it is mostly aimed at. There is an option in the setting where blood can be turned off, so that could bring the age rating down to a 12+. However, the age rating will probably stay at 16+ due to the nature of the game, the violence and if there is any swearing throughout the game.

Perception/Tone/Guidelines/Enjoyment/Experience

  • Well-Known, Production value, Stands-out
  • Good Marketing
  • Easy to understand
  • Easy to play and learn controls
  • Images of the game
  • Trailer of the game.

Communication Strategy

The game trailer will allow communication to get to the audience such as, when it’s out, the age rating, who created the game etc... The trailer includes narrative of the story, During the game there is a tutorial on how to play the game, the controls are easy to learn. The trailer shows the audience some of the storyline, it allows them to understand the characters better than if they just go straight into playing the game. The narrative is in the beginning of the game as well as being in the trailer.

There will be a narrative during the game, telling the players what happened in the past, before the game is set. This allows the players to get a sense of why they are fighting thugs and the revenge aspect. The message we are trying to get across is that how you play the game is entirely in the player's hands, if they want to approach the game level in  all guns blazing approach then they can, whereas if they want to approach it in a stealthier approach than they can by choosing their weapons before the level begins.

The cost to buy will be about £25.00 varying on where you buy the game from, in America it is $31.14, this is so everyone can buy it as it is hopefully cost efficient to them. The overall message is to have fun and play the game how you want to play the game. It is truly dependent on the player's choices throughout the game.

Competitive Positioning:

Rogue Games are well known in the community of gaming so many people will buy the game, gaming shops and large shopping stores will sell the game as that’s where the game will be sold the most and profit will be made the most. People will buy the game as they might want something different other than a game where you fight for freedom or the truth, so that Blood Ties: The Vendetta will do well as it’s different to the other games.

Why have i chosen this idea?

I have chosen this idea as i feel as if this is the best way to sell my product to the audience. Also, another reason i have decided to do a game trailer is so it can go with my game that i am making in BTEC Games Development. This ideas stand out to the audience and maybe ensuring that they will buy the product.

The impact on the audience:

The impact on the audience from game trailers include dragging the audience in by grabbing their attention, whether that is from a well-known title or a title that stands out to the audience, does it appeal to them. Subsequently, if the product stands to the target audience they might buy the game.

For my brief I had to go through a range of creative thinking skills. This included making a rough brief before writing my best brief.

This is the start of my popplet, where I discussed what is normally in a video game advert. Some of the ideas I had included: release date at the end if the advert, the PEGI rating of the game, make sure there is no spoilers throughout the advert, make sure it draws the audience in so that they buy the game, it also has to show the main character in the game. Also, an advert should also include the price it will cost when it is released, nevertheless an advert should also include a date for the game if it is going to be pre-ordered and the price it will cost for it to be pre-ordered.

Peer Assessment feedback

You have given a detailed project summary and made it clear what the product is that you are delivering. You have specified who your target audience is and why it has been set as that age boundary. An improvement would to be to speak in a more formal manner instead of saying things such as "To get rid of thugs you need to kill them".

Another improvement to be made is to neaten up the brief, split things into paragraphs so it is easier to read, rather than just a large untidy block of text.

Feedback by : Lewis Browne and Brandon Frost

Peer Assessment response

I agree with some of the points, such as the splitting it into paragraphs, I also agree with the untidiness as well. This feedback will help me improve my blog as they are positively helping me get a higher grade.

Enterprise skills

The enterprise skills for this included teamwork and cooperation as my peers looked at my work and told me what I done well and what I need to improve for next time. The reason  why these skills help me is because I can ask my peers for their response about what I need to improve my work.

Why am I taking undertaking this research?

I am undertaking this research as it is part of my Unit 7 Creative Media. For my Creative Media I am making a game trailer for the game I am creating Games Development called Blood Ties: The Vendetta (the trailer is below this).

I have done a game trailer as this is an effective way of selling my game as it will make my game sell more quickly as people are interested.

Why am I undertaking this research?

I am undertaking this research as I am doing it for my Unit 7 Creative Media. For Unit 7 I am making a game trailer for the game I am creating in Games Development called Blood Ties: The Vendetta.

I have decided to do this as it will sell my game more and get more interest from people (the trailer for my game is down below).

The research I undertook to get ideas.

The research I done to see what would do best to sell. Some of the research I looked at included was looking at live action game trailers, game trailers and what makes a good game trailer etc... I looked at live action trailers mostly as I feel this is a good way to film a trailer and to sell the characters more to the viewers. The research also included seeing what made a good trailer using a range of varied skills, which would consequently lead to the product being sold because of the trailer standing out the audience, subsequently meaning that the viewer is interested in the product.

Most of the research took place on the internet as that is where most trailers are. There are some trailers on social media for example: Facebook and Twitter and on websites.

Most game trailers have an in depth description of the main characters like the protagonist and antagonist. They also have quick shots, dramatic music (which is either fast tempo or slow tempo).

Primary research

Primary research is where you find the research you self. This means that the information is correct. This is a good way of collecting information as you go out and collect it yourself. Some of the primary research included doing a question and analysis. Some of the people who answered the questionnaire were between the age of 15-24, mainly males with a handful of females answering. Also, some of the questions included, when watching a game trailer what do you want to see from it, how long should a game trailer be, how often do you watch game trailers and if you watch a game trailer will you go and buy the game.

Secondary research

When I was doing research, it was secondary research as someone else has already looked into the research. The research I looked at could possibly be incorrect as someone else has researched it and changed the results. Some other research I done included looking into other games that are similar to mine and how they have made a successful game trailer to sell their game to the audience that are watching the trailer. The research also included seeing what similar games have in their game that I could potentially have in my game to make mine even better.

The enterprise skills used here included innovative thinking and problem solving. I had to use innovative thinking as I had to see what made the game successful and what was unsuccessful in the game and how could I improve on the mistakes that was in the similar games to my game. The research also included in this is was making sure that the research wasn't biased, this lead to me using the enterprise skill problem solving so I could see how to change problems that might happen whilst making my product.

Consumer research

Consumer research is where you ask questions to people by sending questions through the post, telephone them and ask them. This a way of getting to potential customers to buy the product as they are possibly interested in it. Aimed at the behaviour of the customers, through a telephone, face to face interviews and mail surveys.

I used this in my research, when I made the questionnaire and analysis, to see what game genres/platformers people want to have the most and what genre they will play the most if the game stands out to them.

Market research

Doing market research allows you to see how to improve your product to potentially grab new customers. This allows you to make more profit with new customers buying the product all the time. Where is the best sell locations around the world, shopping characteristics. Involves both primary and secondary research. Short, to the point, addressed to specific individuals.

Some of the market research I done included seeing how much games of my genre cost in different shops, this would determine where I would sell my game.

Contractual Brief

A contractual brief is a document which is shared between a client and the company. The layout is clear which allows the client to understand the brief without getting confused. It outlines what the company have to do and how the company will organize their work.

Co-operative Brief

This type of brief is where two or more companies get the same brief from the client. This allows for the two companies to work together to make the product. An advantage of a co-operative brief is it gives out easy information to the client as well as the two companies.

Where will the product/service be distributed and consumed?

The products will be sold online or at different shops. Online you can buy it from Amazon, Ebay or a shops online website.

It is distributed across the world for example: you can buy it in Great Britain, the Americas, Europe, Asia, and in Australia. This is so countries get to have the product and instead of only certain countries having the product.

How will the product meet the requirements?

Some of the ways the product can meet the requirements are by standing out to the audience, if it interests the viewers they are most likely to go and buy the game, another reason is if it is a sequel to something already out, this will make customers get the product to see if the new product will be as good as the first product. The product will also need to meet requirements if the target audience is correct, if it is child friendly (e.g. blood/gore, language, violence anything inappropriate.)

The market success all depends on the opinion of the customers,if they like the product they are more likely to buy it, meaning  the success will be high and the more profit will come in whereas, if they don't like it then they will not buy it and there will be no sales or profit.

Nevertheless, if someone buys the product second hand, then the product is still being sold and profits are being made. However, if a company brings out a new product similar to your product that appeals to a more varied range of people then the rival's product is going to get more profit than yours. This is a main problem that many companies face on a day-to-day bases, the best product means the best sales and profit.

Similar Adverts Deconstruction

Call of Duty Black Ops 3, 6 November 2015,Treyarch, Beenox, Raven Software, Mercenary Technology,is an FPS (First Person Shooter), has a similar trailer to mine as it shows some of the main characters in the game throughout the trailer, it also shows some fighting that will occur either online against other real life people or in the campaign where you fight the AI. Near the end of the trailer, there is a clip of the game mode "Zombies". This is where the player either in solo or multiplayer can fight zombies, which are consequently, put into rounds, which get harder as the player progresses through the game mode.

At the start of the trailer, the music builds up to something significant that happens at either the middle or the end of the trailer, this could lead to in showing some new features of the game such as wall-running whilst playing online or something that happens in the campaign that only has a sound clip and no video clip of what has or is about to happen, this is to stop spoilers from the game being released to the public, meaning no one will buy the game as it has been spoiled.

Black Ops 3's trailer has helped my creation of a game trailer as it shows everything a game trailer should have, the characters, gameplay of the game, game modes (Zombies, Multiplayer), release date and price it will cost to pre order and to buy on release. I have added this into my trailer by showing some of the action scenes of my game as well as the location and setting.

Far Cry Primal, 23 February 2016, Ubisoft Montreal, Ubisoft Shanghai, Ubisoft Toronto, Ubisoft Kiev, is an Action-Adventure open- world, has a trailer similar to mine, due to the reason that the trailer like Black Ops 3 shows some of the fighting that will happen throughout the game i.e. fighting an Elephant, Mammoth, Saber-toothed Tiger, Woolly Rhino, Cave Bear, Cave Lion, Wolf etc... The trailer also reveals that you the player can use "Hunter Vision" this can be used when you are looking for enemies or animals that are bleeding as well as enemies that are hidden so well, that you need to go around where the enemies are and then kill them.  The trailer begins with some slow paced music which will get more fast paced as the trailer gets more exciting and thrilling.

Far Cry Primals trailer has helped me as it has shown me what I need to do to have a successful trailer, which means people will buy my game when it is released.

Uncharted 4, 10 May 2016, Naughty Dog, trailer shows some of the best parts of the game, for example, it shows the main character Nathan Drake hanging onto  the end of a crane whilst going over a river, before crashing into something, but it fades out to a black screen so no spoilers are given through the trailer. The trailer also shows some fighting scenes in the game, showing the audience that although it is an adventure, but also an action game.

The trailer also shows the character picking up some treasure which could either be something significant for the game's storyline but it could also be showing of some of the games collectibles that are in some of the game's locations.

The music in the trailer is fast paced which shows that the game is going to be filled with fast paced moments, which are heart seeking to the audience leading them to buy the game but to also enjoy the game. The trailer also shows clips of some multiplayer where characters in the main game are playable in multiplayer.

Like Far Cry Primal, Uncharted 4's trailer has helped me as it has shown all of the characters that you can play as it multiplayer. This was successful as it also should the campaign characters without spoiling the game for anyone.

Forza Horizon 3, 27 September 2016, Playground Games, Turn 10 Studios, has a completely different film trailer to other racing game trailers, to start with the trailer shows the player racing against other cars and vehicles such as Helicopters, Aircraft, Buggies and more. The music in the trailer is fast paced which could mean that the drivers are quite young and have lots of energy.

The trailer also shows some of the location, this is ever done through the camera following the cars while racing or whilst they are in the free roam aspect of the game. The trailer also shows some races against real life opponents, this shows the audience that most of the races are an online race.

The Forza Horizon 3 trailer has helped me as it has shown me what a trailer should have if the game is an online racing game, it also showed me how to show the world without spending forever going to every location in the game. The trailer also shows some of the vehicles available to the player in the game.

The Order 1886, 20 February 2015, Ready at Dawn, SIE Santa Monica Studio, is an action- adventure game with a horror aspect. The trailer shows a Victorian London, which is also an alternate history. The music in the trailer is slow paced which means something massive will happen in the game. The trailer also shows the main character and the character that you play as throughout the game.

The trailer also shows some of the enemies that you fight in the game, the enemies are humans who have been bitten by some weird animal, which subsequently means they turn into the animals. The trailer also shows some of the location in which my game is set.

The trailer for The Order: 1886 has used loads of skills to sell the trailer. Some of these skills include birds eye view of the location, the player and their allies in the game, as well as the enemies the players throughout the game.

Doom 4, 13 May 2016, id Software, is an FPS (First Person Shooter), horror game. We can tell that it is a horror game by the trailer, the trailer starts of with the player waking up before it cutting to a scene of the player killing the enemies, which in this case are monsters. From the trailer we can also tell that the game is a FPS, due to the reason that the action is seen through the player's eyes.

However, although Doom 4 is an FPS game, you cannot aim down the sights on the guns you are using, you can only aim down the sights when you have weapon attachments on that gun i.e. scopes.

The music in the trailer starts of slow paced, it then goes fast paced when the trailer reaches its climax with all the action happening in that segment.

The Doom 4 trailer, has used good skills to sell the game trailer, it shows the enemies through the player's eyes, it also shows some of the blood and gore which you can experience if you play the game. The skills that were used in the trailer could help me with my trailer as it could make the trailer more effective and make sure it persuades the audience to buy the game.

Trailers like mine

Trailers like mine include the Assassin's Creed Franchise, Far Cry series.

These are like as they stand out to viewers as well as having a catchy title. Some of the skills that make the trailers successful is the way the scene is built, it gives the audience the feel of being there in the trailer as the main character or one of the characters, the environment being shown as if the character is real. This shows the audience that danger is in the characters life and that danger will be part of the players journey throughout the game whether that is avoiding danger or being the danger. Trailers also make the audience feel as if the actual game actually happened in real life and that you (the player/viewers) are taking part in the scenes, in doing so they make the scenery look real to draw the audience in making them buy the product.

The music used also draws the audience in, nevertheless, the fast tempo music with the slow build up makes the audience know something is about to happen, and when the slow build up stops and the fast tempo music starts the action begins.

When trailers are made they often show some of the characters which mainly consist of the protagonist (hero),antagonist (Villain), some of the protagonists/antagonists helpers, who you will come across throughout the game. Making sure the audience understand the game, it is pointless making a game no one knows how to play as no one will buy it, whereas if you create a game where the audience knows what to do then they are more likely to buy it. Also, if the game is a sequel then people are going to buy the game to see if the new game is going to live up to the  first games expectations.

The enterprise skills used for the section above include commercial awareness as i researched other trailers like mine then i can see what they did well to make their trailer successful, then  see what went wrong for them then improve their mistakes to make sure mine is successful.

This game trailer is like mine as it includes fast tempo shots, quick shots, shots of the characters you come across in the game. Music is built up throughout then reaches its peak when action happens.

Far Cry's game trailers are like mine as it involves lots of action, fast and slow tempo, builds up tension throughout the trailer. Then near the middle and the end of the trailer, the action kicks in.

For my game trailer, it will be a live action trailer. I have done this as I feel as if it will be the most effective way of selling the game to people.

Summary

I am happy with how this unit has gone, my trailer needs to be improved as it is not that good compared to other trailers that were made in my class.

Strength

Some of the my strengths in this unit included having a good description of similar adverts to my trailer. Some other strength included having a brief that was well descripted, it also clearly showed the target audience as well as the different types of research.

Weakness

The biggest weakness is my trailer, this is because the trailer does not show the actual the game itself. This is something I need to improve for next time.

How can I improve for next time?

In order to improve for next time, i will need to improve my enterprise skills, this means using them when evaluating
