Visual Effects

To be able to understand how iconic artists impacted the history and progression of visual effects

Saul Bass-A graphic designer and filmmaker. Known for his design for his film posters. Worked for Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Otto Preminger, Billy Wilder, and Martin Scorsese.

Maurice Binder- Film title designer, best known for his work on 14 James Bond including the first Dr.No in 1972. Created the signature gun barrel sequence for the opening titles of Dr.No.

To be able to understand the purpose of visual effects

  1. Makes the beginning look interesting.
  2. Stands out
  3. Iconic to that show
  4. Shows the story in a couple of minutes without spoiler (Show you themes of a film)
  5. Move away from realism

The title sequence of Catch Me If You Can stands out than other title sequences because it shows the storyline without spoiling the film.

Casino Royale's title sequence is unique as it gives away the type of film it will be, this is shown in the sequence by the main actor, Daniel Craig, holding a silenced pistol and sneaking up on a person, which shows it is a spy movie.

Why do the music industry go for CGI and visual effects so often?

It makes music videos relevant to what the song is based about.

The title for the 1966 film Batman directed by Leslie H. Martinson, is very basic. Because the technology that is used for title sequences today wasn't around when the film was released.

The video above is from the 1978 film Superman directed by Richard Donner. Unlike the Shaun of the Dead title sequence, the technology that was used in that title sequence was not around when the Superman film was released and this is shown through the difference in quality. The Shaun of the Dead title sequence hints that the film is about zombies throughout the title sequence whereas the Superman title sequence only give a hint about the film,  the title sequence is flying through space which hints that the film may include flying.

The above video is the opening title sequence to Shaun of the Dead, 9th April 2004 directed by Edgar Wright, is a film about a Londoner who is caught up in a zombie apocalyptic uprising. Throughout the title sequence there are hints that the film is about zombies, the hints are shown in the sequence by people walking like zombies, near the end of the sequence the main actor, Simon Pegg, is seen walking like a zombie having just woken up.

  • Scenes from the school (Classroom, playground, fight scene)
  • Re-film some of the first scene where the house is robbed

Idea 1

The first idea of my title sequence. This involves people wearing a mask, which then goes into the eye of the mask (Like the James Bond gunbarrel sequence), subsequently, showing that the film is about a cult. It is also shown as being a film about a cult  because the background will have masks flying around.

Idea 2

The second idea for my title sequence is a shot a a scene where people walk past the camera and when they have gone following them will be the names of actors and actresses, and at the end when a main character walks past in will come up with the title 'Released'.

The two images above shows the same shot and scene, but the difference is the second image has the letter T, the other difference is that in the second image one of the people that are walking have taking a step, which has brought the T up on the screen, this also means that when the people take a step a word appears on the screen.

Using Adobe After Effects to create my title sequence, in this image I am adding an image/video of two people walking past a camera. After, this stage, I will start to add the names of people who are involved with the drama, these include actors/actresses, director, cameraman, editor, sound, scriptwriter.

In this image, I have added the full name of one of the actors, the name has moved along with the background video. This happens when the video moves, the name goes behind the two people walking. The name has moved from in front of the two people, to now being positioned behind the people.

The image above shows the name beginning to disappear by flying of the screen. This is linked to the first two images, where the people walking take a step and then the name starts to appear on screen, but in this scene when the two people walk further, that's when the name starts to fly off the screen.

Unlike the first couple of images where the name was going behind the people, the name now is flying in front of the two people walking, this is the start of the animation out of the video.

In the image above, the name has completely gone of the screen. The text is shown by the red text box to the right of the video. This shows that the name has fully gone of the screen of the current video playing in the background.
